An electrical apprenticeship was completed with the Australian Government that included general contracting, manufacturing of electrical switchboards and maintenance service delivery throughout various government installations including defence establishments, science and technical government buildings and associated services. In 1980 from inception and through the development of a family owned business more experience was gained in a range of industry sectors. The company was multi-disciplined and included electrical and instrumentation contracting, structural steel and metal manufacturing, welding products, gas and associated welding products supply. The business was involved in commercial, industrial and domestic contracting to a range of industry sectors including general construction, multi-level and high-rise developments, shopping centres and petro-chemical industries. New products and systems were developed and marketed through this period for use in building and construction projects.
In 1993 after moving on from the family business, Nev advanced his career through several management roles that included the Regional Manager for Housing for a division of Boral Plasterboard and Sales Manager for Dowell Windows, a Boral subsidiary. Through this period he was heavily involved in Boral group associated marketing activities for several Boral building products and allied group companies.
In 1996 the position of General Manager was secured for Jeffress Engineering a 50+ year old mechanical and general engineering company. This was a very challenging position and required some tough decisions to be made to rationalise the business to quickly change and adapt to new market conditions, process and products.
New challenges beaconed and Nev moved to Sydney in 1998 and was appointed General Manager of Tryton Engineering, at that time a 30 year old specialist electrical and instrumentation controls company. Contracts delivered were in diverse market sectors and included projects for water treatment and waste water, petro-chemical, food processing and waste management. Experience was also gained in corporate governance while sitting on the Tryton Group Limited Board and as a Director and Company Secretary. While at Tryton a unique waste management development project was undertaken in conjunction with the Lismore City Council which used Vermiculture (worms) to process the Shire’s green waste. Significant exposure to overseas manufacturing and procurement, cooperative joint venture alliances, raising public and venture capital was gained through this period.
On returning to Queensland in 2003 Nev again went back to manufacturing and building products. In 2004 he was appointed General Manager of Peer Industries a company manufacturing a range of metal products for the building industry. Improvements were quickly identified and made to increase efficiency, systems, HR process, quality and logistics to turn the company around and make a significant difference to the bottom line after several years of declining profits.
In 2006, the opportunity to enter the consulting field presented itself through the development of strategic and short term appointments in contract general management, development roles and in succession planning. This opportunity enabled over 25 years of experience gained to be used to further evaluate and improve the bottom line through a range of assignments in general business.
Experience gained in developing and implementing continuous improvement programs, business and financial metrics outcomes, cultural change and quality assurance was then extended to include other service industries, nurseries and truck tyre retailing. These assignments and activities have included development of strategic and business plans, organisational restructuring, HR development, change management, corporate planning and improved governance. Practical action items and plans are developed that lead to measurable improvements in company performance through all areas of the enterprise. Nev provides mentoring, advice and guidance to business owners, managers and operators through programs, development processes and in chairing of advisory panels and boards of management.
