Senior Consultant - Doug Lukin

35 years of business management experience.

Doug has 35 years of business management experience.  The majority of that was in the Supply and Logistics area of International shipping, servicing Ocean-going Cruise fleets through to fishing fleets on a global basis. Within that discipline he led a conglomeration of companies to an IPO in the early nineties and has travelled extensively.

Most Recent experience:
In January 2008, he took up a full time executive contract for two years with Visy Australasia as Director Global Supply Chain.

In this new role, Doug reported directly to the CEO as a member of the Executive Board and was responsible for all Supply Chain functions including three direct report General Managers.  The Visy group operates 113 manufacturing sites in Australasia employing some 5500 staff.  Key areas of responsibility included:
  • Logistics :
This Division was a profit centre within the Group and contracted transport/warehousing/ distribution services in free market to all Divisions as well as external customers.  The Division had its own fleet as well as a large a sub-contract pool and grew from $90m to $220m in annual revenues during Doug’s tenure.
  • Information Technology:
The entire IT platform for the Group was managed through a central team of approximately 80 staff.  The CIO reported to Doug and was responsible for supporting all manufacturing control systems, interfaces and financial reporting.  SAP was a core system and the team had an annual operations budget of $25m.  The group had seven separate data bases when Doug joined and this was condensed down to two and the organisation then embarked on a cloud computing model which will save $20m in cost over 5 years.
  • Procurement and Global Sourcing:
A centre-led group activity managing all sourcing and procurement of raw materials, engineering spares, consumables and contract services with annual spend of $1.6b with savings of approximately 3% during Doug’s tenure.
During his tenure, Doug led a steering committee for S&OP, coordinating all operating Divisions for reduction of material waste and manpower duplication.

In his global role, he also had functional responsibility for the same activities in the Pratt USA business with Department Heads reporting to him (in a ‘dotted line’ capacity) for global coordination. The Pratt Group operates 38 manufacturing sites spanning from Chicago to Mexico employing around 3,500 people.  Activity value of Logistics was $100m.  The Procurement annual spend was in the order of $550m, and IT had a budget of $8m.

Last year Doug consulted to  the Toll Group on acquisitions in both Australasia and the USA.

Doug is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
